Makassar – The Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM) of Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) actively participated in supporting the webinar titled “Reflection and Resolution on Disaster Risk Reduction” held on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. The event served as a platform for evaluation and the formulation of disaster mitigation strategies to address challenges in the coming year.

Indonesia, which is geographically vulnerable to various disaster threats such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and hydrometeorological disasters due to climate change, requires strong strategic steps and collaboration.

The webinar featured Dr. Soerja Kusuma, S.Si., M.Si., Head of the Higher Education Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction, who delivered the opening speech.

The main speakers for the event included:

• Dr. P. Hadi Wijaya, S.T., M.T., Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation;

• Professor Rahmat Gernowo, Lecturer at the Department of Physics, Diponegoro University; and

• Professor Eko Teguh Paripurno, Lecturer at the Disaster Management Master’s Program, UPN Yogyakarta.

Additionally, Professor Adjie Pamungkas from ITS and Dr. Aria Mariani from the Bandung Mitigation Hub contributed their insights and responses during the discussion session.

The Head of the Center for Disaster Research and Development (Puslitbang Kebencanaan), Ilham Alimuddin, Ph.D, expressed his commitment to supporting cross-institutional collaboration for strengthening disaster mitigation.

“As part of a higher education institution committed to community service, we believe that Disaster Risk Reduction efforts must be based on the reflection of experience and research-based innovation. UNHAS’s involvement in this webinar is part of that endeavor,” he stated.

The webinar is the result of a collaboration between ITS, FPT PRB, UNS, BNPB, UPNJ, UNDIP, UNHAS, and BMH. These various parties shared their insights and experiences in tackling geological and hydrometeorological disasters, as well as the increasingly complex challenges of climate change.

With the active participation of LPPM UNHAS and various relevant parties, this webinar is expected to be a concrete step in building an Indonesian society that is more resilient in facing future disaster challenges.
