PSLH – Unhas and UMRAH Establish Cooperation to Strengthen AMDAL Management Capacity

Makassar, April 24, 2025 – The Center for Environmental Studies (PSLH), one of the research centers under the auspices of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) at Hasanuddin University, received an official visit from the Head of LPPM at Raja Ali Haji Maritime University (UMRAH) Tanjungpinang, Dr. Wahyuddin, on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
This visit was not merely a meeting between institutions, but rather a strategic first step towards cooperation in increasing human resource capacity in the field of environmental studies, particularly in the aspect of Environmental Impact Analysis (EIA).
Quoted from Unhas TV, Prof. Dr. Anwar Daud, as Head of PSLH-LPPM Unhas, welcomed the UMRAH delegation. He said that UMRAH has great potential in natural resource management, especially in the marine and fisheries sectors. However, he added, the challenge ahead is not only to utilize this potential but also to ensure its sustainable management.
Also present during the visit were Muhammad Junaid, Ph.D., as Secretary of PSLH Unhas, and Dr. Jamaluddin Fitrah, lecturer at the Faculty of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Unhas, who accompanied the delegation during the discussion and cooperation exploration session.
The Head of LPPM UMRAH, Dr. Wahyuddin, emphasized that this collaboration is not merely a formality. He stated, “We do not want to continue to be mere spectators of the AMDAL projects taking place in the Riau Islands. We want to be the main actors in ensuring that development continues in line with environmental conservation efforts.”
Furthermore, he considers Unhas a strategic partner due to its reputation in environmental studies and institutional capacity building. “Unhas has a long track record and resources that we desperately need to support our institutional transformation in the environmental sector,” he added.
As a form of commitment, PSLH LPPM Unhas expressed its readiness to support UMRAH through basic AMDAL training programs, training in the preparation and assessment of environmental documents, and capacity building through the Training Officer Course (TOC) scheme. The ultimate goal is to establish an independent PSLH UMRAH that is capable of conducting professional and sustainable environmental training.
“Our assistance is not just a formality. We are ready to help from start to finish, from training to best practices in preparing environmental documents,” said Prof. Anwar.
This visit is the first step in a long-term collaboration between Unhas and UMRAH in building an academic and practical ecosystem in the environmental sector, particularly in coastal and island areas of Indonesia.
