UNHAS LPPM’s WITARIS Research Center and Bulukumba Regency Planning, Research, and Innovation Agency Hold FGD on Forest Area Function and Designation Change Study

Thursday, November 14, 2024 – The Center for Regional, Spatial Planning, and Spatial Information Research and Development (PUSLITBANG WITARIS) of the Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM) at Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) collaborated with the Bulukumba Regency Development Planning, Research, and Innovation Agency (BAPPEDA) to hold a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) themed: “Assessment of Forest Area Function and Designation Change in Bulukumba Regency.” The activity took place on November 14, 2024, on the 3rd Floor of the LPPM UNHAS Building.

This FGD aimed to gather in-depth information regarding the changes in forest area function and designation in Bulukumba Regency, and to seek solutions for sustainable management.

During the event, participants discussed various issues related to the impact of changes in forest land use on the ecosystem, local communities, and the regional economy.

Dr. Samsu Arif, M.Si, Head of the WITARIS Research Center LPPM UNHAS, stated in his address that research related to the change in forest area function and designation is crucial for understanding the potential and challenges faced by Bulukumba Regency in its effort to maintain forest sustainability while simultaneously supporting regional development.

“The forest is not merely a natural resource; it also plays a strategic role in supporting community welfare and climate change mitigation,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, the Head of Bulukumba Regency BAPPEDA stated that the FGD is expected to produce constructive recommendations for planning regional policies based on scientific assessment and community needs.

“We hope that the outcomes of this discussion can serve as the foundation for formulating policies that are more adaptive and responsive to the challenges of forest function change in Bulukumba,” he said.

During the FGD, participants presented various views and experiences related to the transition of forest function, as well as its impact on biodiversity and community life.

Academics from UNHAS also presented their assessment findings regarding the patterns of land-use change and their subsequent impact on the forest ecosystem in the region.

The activity concluded with the signing of a joint commitment between UNHAS and BAPPEDA Bulukumba to continue collaboration in research and the development of more sustainable policies for the forest areas in Bulukumba.

With the implementation of this FGD, it is hoped that a synergy can be created among the academic world, local government, and the community in realizing better forest area management, for the welfare of the community and the preservation of nature in Bulukumba Regency.
