On October 1-4, 2024, the Center for Biotechnology Research and Development (PUSLITBANG) under the scope of LPPM held a workshop entitled “Selective Breeding, Sex Reversal, Independent Feed Production to Support Smart Fisheries Village Tilapia in South Sulawesi” at UNHAS Hotel & Convention, Makassar. The event was attended by tilapia extension workers and farmers from Maros Regency, Gowa Regency, Pinrang Regency, Mamasa Regency, and Enrekang Regency, as well as MBKM internship students.
This workshop aimed to introduce the concept of smart fisheries villages that utilize modern technology in tilapia farming. Participants were invited to discuss innovations in aquatic resource management, the use of information technology, and best practices in sustainable fish farming.
In his opening remarks, the Head of the Biotechnology Research and Development Center emphasized the importance of collaboration between researchers and industry players to increase productivity and sustainability in the fisheries sector. “With the application of appropriate technology, we can improve the efficiency of tilapia farming and provide greater economic benefits to the community,” he said.
The workshop also featured hands-on sessions and presentations from experts in the fields of biotechnology and fisheries, who provided insights into the latest techniques in fish farming management. In addition, participants were given the opportunity to share their experiences and challenges in the fisheries industry.
This event is expected to be the first step in realizing sustainable smart fishing villages and raising awareness about the importance of innovation in fish farming to support national food security.
